Which of B.C.'s biggest engineering firms are in Surrey?

We'd expect most of the big names in engineering in British Columbia would be in Vancouver. That's born out with Business in Vancouver's Biggest engineering firms in B.C. list, published March 6, 2012.

The list is ranked by the number of professional engineers.

One firm does call Surrey home:

Solaris Management Consultants Inc
5588 Panorama DrSurrey V3S 1B7
P:604-575-8300 F: 604-575-8301
Rank: 20, with 53 professional engineers

Don't call on them to put a new roof on, though. They specialize in oil and gas processing plants.

Other than two firms in Richmond,no other big engineering firms south of the Fraser River made the list.

Biggest telecommunications companies in B.C. that are in Surrey

How many of B.C.'s biggest telecommunications companies are in Surrey, BC?

According to Business in Vancouver's annually tabulated list "Biggest B.C. telecommunication firms" released on February 28, 2012, of the top 25 companies:

  • nine are in Vancouver
  • five are in Burnaby
  • four are in Richmond
  • three are in New Westminster
  • two are in Victoria
  • One each in North Vancouver and Pitt Meadows

Pitt Meadows?

This list isn't unusual.

With the recent census showing Surrey growing so quickly in population it's interesting that the economic engines of the region are so heavily concentrated north of the Fraser River.

I have yet to do a proper survey, but it's rare for Surrey-based companies appear more than occasionally on any of Business in Vancouver's lists of biggest companies.

There are a lot of historical reasons for central offices to be based in Vancouver or Burnaby, but if Surrey wants to be more than a commuter town it should be better represented as a home for the companies that make a difference in B.C.'s economy.

Of course, maybe having the 'biggest' companies in Surrey isn't important. Maybe it's better to have a lot of smaller diversified companies.

This site is experimental. See About (top right) for more, or Blog for meta-information. The working goal is to create an almanac of items, tidbits of information and methods of gathering information.

Right now the site is biased to just south of the Fraser River, within the northern reaches of great City of Surrey, but there is some foraging further afield.
