Cherry blossoms along 102 Avenue

Cherry blossoms

Could the year be complete without a picture of a cherry tree in bloom?

This one is on 102 Avenue, between King George Boulevard and 140 Street. I took the picture with the phone, which did a decent job. It helped that it was just past dawn, so the light was beautifully horizontal.

In the brief span of time they're in bloom my favourite time is when the leaves start to poke through the petals. They start off pink, as if the petals pigmentation has rubbed off on them.

Cherry tree at King George Skytrain Station

Cherry tree blossoms

King George Station's lone cherry tree makes a brave effort

It's not quite the same effect as the rows of cherry trees at Burrard Street Station, but King George Station has its own pink-blossomed tree.

When I took this shot the flowers were just a bit past their peak. Hints of bright green were starting to poke their way out the stems, creating a lovely combination of pink and green against the dark wet bark.

Every day the green bits grow a bit bigger. Soon all the bird nests will become invisible. This one is just around the corner from the Skytrain station:

Possibly a thrush's nest, soon to be hidden by leaves

Yes, it did snow

It seems hard to believe, but yes, for a few days in mid-December there was snow on the ground.

By Christmas it was almost all gone and hardly more than a hazy memory. Here are a few pictures from Holland Park:

Info on South of the Fraser River: Surrey, Delta, White Rock, City of Langley, Township of Langley, Fort Langley. Maybe a bit of Abbotsford, just for fun.

This site is experimental. See About (top right) for more, or Blog for meta-information. The working goal is to create an almanac of items, tidbits of information and methods of gathering information.

Right now the site is biased to just south of the Fraser River, within the northern reaches of great City of Surrey, but there is some foraging further afield.
