Hike for Hunger 2012 at Bear Creek Park

The Girl Guides lead the parade: Hike for Hunger 2012 at Bear Creek Park

It's an annual event. 2012 was the 16th, which is a pretty decent run.

A representative of the Surrey Food Bank said it was organized by the local Scouting organizations, both Scouts and Girl Guides, with the Surrey Food Bank.

Scouting groups from Surrey and beyond came for the pancake breakfast, sponsored by the North Surrey Lions, a pep rally and then a parade/walk around the park, which is about 2km. I noticed at least one group from Langley.

To top it off there were a number of big fuzzy mascots with their handlers and firemen with the big trucks.

Well, if that don't get you going I don't know what will.

Part of the event is for the various scouting groups to gather food items for the food bank. To my untrained eye it looked like they donated about a skid's worth.

I didn't go on the parade -- that might have been a bit creepy -- but I did plunk a few bucks down for the Surrey Food Bank's cook book The Thrifty Kitchen Cookbook and a decent plate of pancakes from the friendly North Surrey Lions. I noticed the typeface for the cookbook was "Hobo", which is an unfortunate choice, although it is a nice and cheerful font.

Groups from all over: Scouts and Guides from a wide area participated

Mascots and anthropormorphized creatures all needed hugs

Open for anyone! The North Surrey Lions hosted the pancake breakfast

This site is experimental. See About (top right) for more, or Blog for meta-information. The working goal is to create an almanac of items, tidbits of information and methods of gathering information.

Right now the site is biased to just south of the Fraser River, within the northern reaches of great City of Surrey, but there is some foraging further afield.
